It’s been seven years now since Man Met Bril Koffie first joined the third wave coffee scene. The point of it all was to offer the Rotterdam community a better alternative to their daily “cup of Joe”. And so they did.
Owner Paul Sharo teamed up with roaster Jelle van Possum, purchased a Giesen and ended up supplying most local businesses, focusing only on B2B services for nearly five years. After that, they opened a coffeehouse and the rest just fell into place.
Although the interior looks like you should put on a pair of gloves and start carrying sacks of coffee beans, everything about Man met Bril is extraordinary: everything is DIY (the software & new probes) and that’s because, as Jelle told me, “we want to show people what we’re doing here”. So, while you’re perusing the menu figuring out what to order, you can also check out the roasting process.
The best part is that all their coffee comes as a result of direct trading, be it from Colombia or El Salvador, as they consider their purchasing to be one of “the most part of our business: establishing a connection”. That’s why when it comes to selling it themselves they choose passion over money; the house blend, for instance, is sold exclusively for B2B. Man Met Bril Koffie supplies sixty businesses in Rotterdam, all the while offering workshops in order to help third parties get the most out of the coffee they purchase.
If you’re planning on paying them a visit, you can find their shop in Vijverhofstraat 70, open every weekday from 8 to 5, and from 9 till 6 on Saturdays and Sundays. You can choose between four different types of filter coffee, and four types of espresso coffee. But don’t worry, they’ll make it easy for you thanks to the colourful menu that has each coffee ground and dosed mounted on the wall.
